Hello booklovers, today I have the pleasure of kicking off the tour for The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell. I am delighted to be sharing my review with you as part of the tour. Don't forget to stop by the other stops on the tour for other great content.

I first came across the famous Brontë's was when I forced to read Wuthering Heights at school, which obviously didn't get me off to a good start. However reading The Madwoman Upstairs really has made me see the three Brontë sisters in a whole new light and made me want to read ALL of their books.

I started reading The Madwoman Upstairs with no expectations and to be perfectly honest I wasn't entirely sure what story was coming my way, but I think I actually fell a little bit in love with it.

The Madwoman Upstairs tells the story of Samantha Whipple, a descendant of the famous Brontë's. When her Father passes away she moves from America to attend Oxford University. Here she tries to piece together the mystery surrounding her inheritance and it leads her on a very Brontesque literary adventure. Although not a fast paced story, it really was one to get completely swept up in and I loved all the literary criticism discussions. I also really liked the way that Catherine perfectly and expertly interweaves parts of each of the Brontë's stories into this. I thought it worked really well and really added to the sense that Samantha Whipple was a Brontë descendant. I found it absolutely fascinating learning more about the Brontë's, you learn more about them as a family, their dynamics, other interests apart from writing and the mystery surrounding their lives and definitely means you see them in a whole new way.

I think what I enjoyed most about this was the eccentricity of it all and especially the main character Samantha Whipple. She was awkward but I adored her and she actually had a brilliantly dry sense of humour. She's not your stereotypical heroine and this is partly why I connected with her as a character so much and I think I would have become just as obsessed as she did about the Brontë's and the need to discover the mystery surrounding them and her inheritance. It very much reflected the tone and stories of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, which I thought this was positively brilliant and of course created a fantastically dark and mysterious atmosphere. This was also heightened by the tortured romance that Samantha suffers, a very clever addition to the plot.

I must also just mention how much I liked the ending. It tied up everything just nicely, whereas the author could have left us wondering.

Whether you are a fan of the Brontë's or not, I heartily recommend this book, it gives you a new view on the sisters and if not originally a massive fan like me, it may change your mind.

Fresh, unique and with a an unlikely, but fantastic heroine that shines a whole new light on the Brontë's

Random Thoughts

It is hard to believe it is almost the end of February. We started off the month with snow, but we haven't really see any since. Instead we are having basically spring weather and it is so weird! Nice, though. We haven't had to really shovel, or plow, and the temperatures are likely saving on heating costs. I am just used to February being my least favourite month of the year because usually the winter really gets to you this month. It is almost refreshing that has been mild. We went for a random road trip last weekend and you could have the windows open in the car and not freeze. It will be interesting to see what March brings...

Weekly Reading

Saga Volume 1 - I love this series, but I was behind in it. With Volume 6 coming out later this year, one of my goals for February was to read all the books I owned in the series. This one was a reread. I loved the reread. This series just has a great cast of characters and a compelling storyline. If you haven't read it, you really should! Strongly recommended.

Big Thunder Mountain - The back story to how a ride came to be named? Big Thunder is a ride at Disney, right? In any case, with a huge series happening right now it was nice to see a complete arc added to Marvel and I actually really enjoyed this Volume. There is a strong female lead and the story takes place in an old western town. The Mountain is a character all its own. It is a fun, quick read. Recommended!

Harbinger - Volume 1: Omega Rising - When I heard that this series was going to include an overweight, female super hero... I had to check it out. I had noticed the series before on Scribd, but never really knew anything about it. Then I saw mention of it on a blog and had to see what I thought. It is also the first time I believe I have read anything by Valiant comics. This volume didn't knock my socks off compared to other things I have read this month, but I did like it and look forward to more! Recommended.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl  - Volume 2: Squirrel You Know It's True - Squirrel Girl is one of the best things happening at Marvel right now. Here we have a female in college kicking butt. She's funny and original and makes fun of Iron Man on Twitter. She is definitely worth checking out if you haven't before! I continue to enjoy her and look forward to the next volume. Strongly Recommended!

Saga Volume 2 - I am loving my reread of this series. It is nice to refresh my memory about things I had forgotten about the series. And, I love Lying Cat. (You know me and animals in comics... And books... Done well, they are my favourite!) At the core this is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet without the suicides. It is the story of love conquering prejudice and war. It is a story for the ages... It just happens to take place in the future in space. Strongly recommended!

Saga Volume 3 - This was also a reread... I have only not read Volume 5, but I didn't reread when I read Volume 4 and things were just not fresh in my memory. I wanted things to be fresh in my mind for Volume 5 and hopefully still be fresh when Volume 6 comes out. Another strong comic in a favourite series. I love Fiona Staples art. She is definitely worth checking out in general! Another strongly recommended volume!

Batgirl - Volume 2: Family Business - I wish I had read more DC comics. They just have the easiness of Marvel Unlimited as an option... And I only have so much funds to use on books. I am glad I took a chance on the first Volume of this series for Valentine's Day because I am really enjoying Babs and her friends. This book also crosses over with Gotham Academy, the one DC series I started last year, so yay for me. I look forward to Volume 3 out later this year! Recommended!

Blog Tour: The Silent Girls by Ann Troup

Title: The Silent Girls
Author: Ann Troup
Published: 18th February 2016

Happy Friyay eve everyone. Today I bring you my stop on the tour for The Silent Girls by Ann Troup for which I am sharing my review.

The Silent Girls opens with a heart racing and very gripping prologue that immediately had me hooked. I love prologues like this as you are straight away thrown into a story, leaving you eager to find out more.

Edie is forced to go back to a place that she hasn't visited for years, a place with a dark past and 5 violent murders many years ago. As Edie returns, the truth slowly starts to come out.

With the gripping prologue that this story starts you off on, the synopsis also had me very keen to find out what would happen. This book is surrounded by mystery and intrigue and you aren't quite sure just what is going to happen.

Although I was hooked from the beginning and the first 30% or so had me keenly reading on, I did find that the pace of the story did start to slow down. For me, I found there was sometimes superfluous information that slightly detracted from the story. That said, Ann's writing and descriptions very easily throw you into the heart of the story and she does create a brilliantly creepy and mysterious atmosphere at times. Also the pace of the story did pick up again and suddenly it was all go and the mystery surrounding everything started to come together, along with a lot of shocking revelations.

I really liked the variety of characters in this story and did have a particular soft spot for one of them who we meet a little way into the story. I also felt so frustrated for Edie, she has to go through so much and I really felt for her. The only thing that I found was sometimes the character dialogue and speech didn't quite seem to match up with their personalities. Sometimes it seemed too rough or soft for their character. This may have been just me, but it was something that I picked up on.

I am in two minds about the ending, although as a reader we get a full conclusion, the characters don't, so unsure whether would have liked to have seen it wrapped up for them or not. Still I was a satisfied reader and the revelations that come about were shocking and also very surprising.

Ann Troup tells tales and can always make something out of nothing (which means she writes books and can create unique things from stuff other people might not glance twice at). She was once awarded 11 out of 10 for a piece of poetry at school – she now holds that teacher entirely responsible for her inclination to write.

Her writing space is known as ‘the empty nest’, having formerly been her daughters bedroom. She shares this space with ten tons of junk and an elderly Westie, named Rooney, who is her constant companion whether she likes it or not. He likes to contribute to the creative process by going to sleep on top of her paperwork and running away with crucial post-it notes, which have inadvertently become stuck to his fur. She is thinking of renaming him Gremlin.
She lives by the sea in Devon with her husband and said dog. Two children have been known to remember the place that they call home, but mainly when they are in need of a decent roast dinner, it’s Christmas or when only Mum will do. She also has extremely decent stepchildren.
In a former incarnation she was psychiatric nurse, an experience which frequently informs her writing. She has also owned a cafe and an art/craft gallery. Now she only makes bacon sandwiches as a sideline, but does continue to dabble with clay, paint, paper, textiles, glue…you name it. Occasionally she may decide to give away some of these creations (you have been warned!).

Book Review: Morning Star by Pierce Brown

Title: Morning Star
Author: Pierce Brown
Published: 11th February 2016
Publisher: Hodder Books

Gorydamn and bloodydamm and just where am I going to find the words!!! Literally the minute I finished this though I thought it's over and didn't know how I was going to get over it, but then joy of joys it has been announced that there is going to be a new series!!! Yes an actual three-part epic next year called Iron Gold so I am happy again! So you might have guessed I may have quite liked the final instalment of the Red Rising Trilogy and I am going to try and form some coherent sentences to explain why.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a superfan of this incredible series and Pierce Brown has taken me on an emotionally fraught journey right to the very last page of Morning Star. If we are going to compare to other series, think a mixture of Game of Thrones with the Hunger Games but dare I say it, better!

It has been a very long and torturous wait for this final instalment, but it was worth it. Pierce more than delivered with this book and it's length was of epic proportions.

There were so many times that Pierce really had me going. He completely throws you in the wrong direction of what you think is going to happen and there is NO way you can figure it out. He doesn't hold back either, a bit like Game of Thrones, I wouldn't pick favourites with your characters as you just don't know what will happen to them. His characters are utter genius though and so unique in their personalities, they are raw, real and honest.

Very few authors can tell a story the way Pierce does and this is why this was such an epic, mind-blowing read. It is all consuming and all you can think of is reading this book, nothing else matters and every single one of these books has done this to me.

Also if you are holding back because you think this series has been too hyped up, don't let that stop you from reading this, I think you will be surprised and very impressed with what you read.

No matter what I say though I still don't think I am going to do this incredible series justice, just please read it!

Break the Chains!

Only thing left to say is when is the film out?!!!!!
