30 Days of Books ~ Day 5

Day 5 ~ A book that makes you happy

So far this series makes me happy... Atticus manages to find humour in the most dire situations. And, there is a dog as a main character. That always makes me love a series more. I also think that it makes me happy just because it handles what could be ridiculous ideas really well. It is definitely not everyday that I enjoy a series that manages to include Jesus as a character. And Hearne, through Atticus, just makes fun of the world in general. There are definitely current events, pop culture references, etc that get brought up and commented on. Plus, Atticus is a Neil Gaiman fan.

Blog Tour: B-Side by Elle Field with Giveaway

Title: B-Side
Author: Elle Field

Good morning all! Today it's my stop on the B-Side blog tour by Elle Field. Today I have a guest post from Elle telling us more about B-Side and how it fits in with the Kept, Lost and Found series. Look out below for a giveaway!

If you look at the other book titles in the Arielle Lockley series, they all have the same sort of feel about them - Kept; Lost; Found - a progression, almost. B-Side, which sits between Lost and Found, is a little bit different, and that's because it is a spin-off book to Lost - basically, it's the other side of the story. (Whilst still being a completely different story!)

I chose this title for two reasons. Firstly, because the B-side of a record was often seen as the weaker song. In comparison to Arielle, Etta often feels this way, especially because Felicity, her  godmother, is paying Arielle far more attention than Etta likes.
Secondly, it's a fitting title because Etta's passion is music; just like Arielle wanted to be the next big fashion designer as a child, Etta wanted to be the next big jazz star. B-Side, I think, perfectly sums up both Etta's love for music and being a spin-off book.

As for Etta's love of music, I chose this to be her passion because if I could actually carry a note, I would love to be a West End musical star. Since I can't though, I'm living through Etta's voice and sharing her musical journey.
Etta is more extreme than Arielle but, between you and me, they are not so different. Both have dreams they want to make happen, and struggles they have to face... Arielle's struggles are just a bit more legal than Etta's!
Writing B-Side was a lot of fun; it's definitely gritter than both Kept and Lost, that's for sure. I always think that writing books is an awesome way to explore all those careers that you thought you might want to do, but never did. Saying that though, I've had an idea recently for my next book which involves an estate agent, and I can safely say that I never wanted to be one of those!

I hope everyone enjoys reading B-Side. Are you a fan of spin-off books?

Elle Field writes romantic comedies, and is the author of the Arielle Lockley series and Geli Voyante's Hot or Not. She grew up in Yorkshire, then moved to Scotland to study International Relations and Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. Elle now lives in London with her boyfriend and their cat. She's a massive fan of sunshine, giraffes, The Killers, Audrey Hepburn movies, playing Scrabble and tea. Oh, and reading, of course!

To celebrate the publication of B-Side, I’m running a giveaway. Prizes are Amazon vouchers, a paperback set of the full Arielle Lockley series (Kept, Lost and B-Side), and a set of vinyl coasters.

B-Side sits between Lost (out now) and Found (out summer 2016) in the Arielle Lockley series - read Etta's version of events in this gritty Lost spin-off.

30 Days of Books ~ Day 4

Day 4 ~ Favourite Book of Your Favourite Series

I don't even know. When a series is 22 books long and is really just a large story broken up... They start to run together. And, I am atrocious at reviewing books so it is not like I can go back to my archives and reread my thoughts on all 22 of them... I do know that there were strong volumes and then there were weaker volumes. I found around volume 13, after the big crossover, there were some hiccups as they tried to come up with a new main storyline. That happened again once those events started to die down. I can also safely say the spin off series never appealed to me as much as the main series. I have read them all, but they were never as good for me.

Book Review: This Must be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell

Title: This Must be the Place
Author: Maggie O'Farrell
Published: 17th May 2016
Publisher: Tinder Press

How to begin to write a review that is as elegant and precise as the amazing Maggie O'Farrell's incredible book This Must be the Place.

Although I have of course heard of  Maggie O'Farrell, this is shockingly my first read from Maggie. There was just something about this one that peaked my interest and made me decide it was time I added it to my list of books read.

Despite being a little deterred by the size of this book, I surprised myself my getting into this really quickly. Maggie's writing just instantly took hold of me and it became a book that I couldn't wait to get back to reading when I had finished the working day.

The book starts with our central character Daniel Sullivan, an American and linguistics professor living in Ireland with his wife and children. This is just the tip of the iceberg though as once you get past that first chapter we are opened up to a whole host of eclectic characters from the past present and future. I loved that sense of not knowing who and where and what time period each chapter would bring. Would we be introduced to a new character, or would we find out more about a character in a different stage of their life.

I don't think I have ever quite got to know characters in a book quite as much as in this one. Maggie brings each character that we meet to life in a way that you feel that these people are you friends and almost family. Each of them has their own flaws and whilst reading, you see how the decisions they once made have an impact later on in their lives. I keenly felt how each of them were trying to find their place in the world and I was utterly enraptured by each of their stories and how they all interlinked with one another.

I have never known a novel to switch back and forth between timelines, characters and even prose quite as effortlessly as Maggie does. This is sometimes the sort of thing that puts readers off, but it has always been something that I love in novels as I feel that you really get to the nitty gritty of all the characters and the story.

My first Maggie O'Farrell read I can honestly say I was blown away. I can see why Maggie is such an esteemed author and writer and I must read her others.

Day 3 ~ Your Favourite Series

I don't think that anyone that reads my blog would be surprised to see my answer is Fables. I started the series in 2009 with some Christmas gift cards. I was never sure if I was a graphic novel fan back then. And, my library has never been big on graphic novels that I could try first. I ended up loving the series and catching up before 2009 was over. The last volume came out last year and I am still sad about it. I used to expect a Volume or 2 a year and now to have none... It's sad!
